FAQ September

The number of people writing to me with questions is phenomonal - I could fill a book with them. So I decided it maybe beneficial to show some of the more commonly asked questions and my responses to them. However, some of the recommendations may not be appropriate in all situations and are not intended as a substitute for treatment or services ordinarily provided by health care professionals for physiological or psychological complaints. Always review any information that you receive on-line with your personal medical care provider. Because of the complexity of medical situations, medical questions will not be addressed.

I've also selective resources relative to healing that I want to tell you about. FAQ Archives.

1 Please can you reassure me that my body does know how to heal itself and get through the menopause without recourse to drugs? I feel I need reassurance to have the confidence to let it go through it itself.

Your body does most certainly know how to heal yourself. To do so it needs you to eat well (see my new book AGE POWER which is just released. You need to make sure you supply your system with everything it needs to enable it to heal itself – from the phytonutrients in fresh non-starchy vegetables and fruits to good quality proteins and omega 3 fats found in fish. You need also to remove the burden placed on your body from eating convenience foods and to cut them out altogether including sugar, all those cooked carb foods made from grains like cereals and pasta and bread. Then your body not only heals itself, your whole being is free to regenerate.

2 I am 46 years old and my blood pressure has just crept up to 132/81 and I would like to bring it back down to 120/80 naturally. I have been following Insulin Balance for 4 1/2 months and love it! I have lost 7 kilos so far. I exercise nearly every day, both aerobically and with weights. I have a personal trainer come in once a month to keep me on track. Thanks so much for X-Factor it has changed my life and explained why I kept putting on weight even though I ate a healthy diet. I am really looking forward to Age Power! Thank You! Diane Healy

Thanks so much for your comments. I am so glad to hear how well you have done for yourself. Congratulations!

3 I have sent for a jar of Serenity cream (as seen in Resources) to help with menopausal symptoms, notably hot flushes. I am currently taking Agnus Castus for the same reason. Do I need to continue with the Agnus Castus once I have started using the Serenity cream? I am also taking Calcium with Magnesium and wonder how necessary this will be?

All three should work together very well for you.

4 What are your thoughts on the Blood Type Diet. I speak with a naturopath who "swears by it" but I'm not convinced.

Please see August FAQ.

5 Might you have any idea how I could get hold of some Splenda! I’m in cape town south Africa. I’ve tried to find it in London, no one has ever heard of it. The chances of being able to find it in south Africa are then nearly impossible. Hope you can shed some light on the matter.

Perhaps order it over the net from the USA. Stevia is even better as a sweetener. You will find on the website addresses for ordering stevia. It may well be available in health stores in South Africa.

6 I have been following the X Factor diet for 2 1/2 weeks now and have been getting a reading of 'small' or 'trace' consistently everyday but have not seen any weight loss on the scales. Am I actually burning fat? How long will it take to start to show on the scales?

I think it is very likely that you are burning fat. Notice how your clothes fit. You can try decreasing your carbs level a little more and see if that makes a difference on the scales.

7 Though most women of my age (43 next month) are advised to have annual mammograms, I have always refused them. Do you think sonograms are a better option? If not, what would you recommend?

I have neither myself. I would recommend self examination. It is simple to carry out and if you find any lumps you can see your doctor about them.

8 I have just finished a very strict diet which I have followed religiously for four and half months the diet consisted of 3 protein 'food packs' and 4 liters of water a day. I have very pleased with the results as I have lost four stone and weigh 54 kilo's and have 15% body fat (my dream has come true!). This week I have started to introduce fish, lean meat and raw green leaves into my diet which is all going very well, but I have a problem that for the last 3 weeks I have had a very strong sweet taste in my mouth which will not seem to go away no matter what. I was made aware at the start of the diet about the burning of fat and the taste being in ketosis leaves in your mouth which I experienced at various points during the diet but these last few weeks it has tastes completely different and very sweet, I have read almost every one of your books and although the burning of ketones is mentioned I cannot find an answer for such a different sweet taste, one theory I had was that if I had burnt all of my fat could this be the test of my muscles burning away? I hope not! Please can you help as no one seems to understand what I mean. I would love to hear from you or anyone who can. Many thanks.

I am so sorry but I have no idea. I would say that it is really important that you now replenish your system with lots of fresh green and bright colored vegetables. You need to restore metabolic balance after the extreme nature of your dieting. You also need to provide more alkaline forming foods.

9 Is it OK to carry on with the Insulin Balance diet when I am pregnant, if so do I need to change the amounts of protein, carbs and fats. Is whey protein OK also when I'm pregnant?

Please see July 2002 FAQ.

10 I know you say that Insulin balance is good for when you are pregnant, but this article suggested steering away from high protein diets as it can cause high blood pressure for life for the baby. They claim proteins should be balanced by starchy carbohydrates in order to break down the proteins. As I am thinking of having a baby next year, I'd appreciate your thoughts.

The Insulin Balance Program is not a high protein diet. It is an adequate protein diet. Eat lots of fresh non-starchy vegetables and low glycaemic fruits too.

11 Can you give more information regarding the reversal of osteoporosis program? Thank you very much, your website is beautiful, inspiring and very informative!

This is a big question. I suggest you read my book PASSAGE TO POWER or John Lee’s WHAT YOUR DOCTOR MAY NOT TELL YOU ABOUT MENOPAUSE.

12 I am really enjoying following the Insulin Balance diet and my body tells me it makes so much sense! However, periodically, self-control slips and I find myself bingeing on the very things I try to avoid, like chocolates or bread. I don't enjoy them and then the whole vicious cycle of guilt and self-loathing kicks in. I have to admit that this does usually happen if I have let myself have a few glasses of wine - which I do enjoy. I suppose the answer would be not to drink at all, but I would appreciate any help on the whole area of self-control and feeling a bit more in control of this complex relationship that many women seem to have with food and self-image. Many thanks.

What you are experiencing is not psychological. It has to do with biochemical imbalances in your body which alcohol appears to trigger. This is a common experience. Use it to become more aware of what works for you and what doesn’t. Each of us is faced with choices to make again and again through out our lives. There are no right or wrong choices. The more you get to know your body and the way it responds to things and how various experiences affect you the freer you are to make choices that are right for you. You may find that one glass of really good wine will work beautifully for instance while more than that or drinking wine that is not really good quality messes things up for you. Experiment, be aware of what happens with neutrality and this can be valuable for you.

13 I was wondering if I am correct in concluding that the X factor diet will be effective in also clearing any Candida albicans/fungal lurgey I suspect I have resident in my body ?

X FACTOR DIET is enormously useful in controlling Candida albicans and in preventing any overgrowth. To clear an overgrowth read "Scourge of Power" in my new book AGE POWER.

14 What is your view on mung beans (mung bean noodles) as part of X Factor diet?

Great stuff.

15 On page 369 of Passage To Power you list epilepsy in the precaution: may cause, list of side effects of Provera. Do you have any referencing to this I can follow up? I came off Depo Provera 4 years ago after 24 years on it. Last year I fell over with multiple tonic clonic seizures. I was 47 then. Also my hair began diffuse shedding approx. 2 years before I came off Depo and is still shedding. I am thinking Depo is responsible for both conditions. Can you please advise whether you consider "Horleys Awsome Whey" to be a quality product. The container states the product contains "instantised whey protein" and "enzymatically hydrolyzed whey protein" Horleys are supposed to be a reputable company. Is this powder OK? I use this powder because I love the taste.

I don’t have a reference for you but I suggest you look up the drug on the net. There is lots of information there. I don’t know the whey product you mention however from its description I do not think it is true ion exchange or micro filtered whey. See in the archives here a piece on MFW or read about it in THE X FACTOR DIET.

16 For years I have had dark circles under my eyes. My daughter, who is in her early twenties has got them. As she is in the entertainment industry it is a serious matter for her. My younger daughter, who is twelve has got them at times. Can you advise us what to do. My older daughter did smoke for a number of years but no longer. We do not drink coffee, tea, wine or spirits. Diet is healthy. My older daughter does a lot of yoga. I have no reason to belief that we cannot overcome this and I know that the answer/s is there somewhere. For your information my older daughter and I are currently not living in the same country. I look forward to your reply. Thank you,

A tendency to black circles does indeed run in families – my own included. I and two of my children get them easily. They are associated often with toxicity in the body which occurs as a result of eating or drinking foods to which your body is not genetically adapted. The most common are milk products and grains such as wheat. We find if we do not eat them nor drink coffee, they virtually disappear. We also do not eat sugar. You need to find out what are the precipitating factors for you.

17 Is "Pilates" an acceptable form of weight bearing exercise with regard to building lean body mass? Thanks for your great books... so many times they have made a positive difference in my life just when I needed it. Your commitment to the well being of others and the integrity of the information is truly appreciated.

Pilates is excellent as a form of resistance training. Great for alignment too. Thanks so much for your kind remarks about my work. The real joy I get from it is in seeing the transformation it often makes available to others. I believe so strongly that each of us is here to bring into being our deepest dreams and highest visions. Health is so necessary in the process.

18 Are you well?

Your question makes me laugh. The answer is I am, just now, enormously well but I have just got over a bizarre experience. I contracted some kind of virus (at least we suspect it was a virus) which looked virtually identical to measles (which I never had as a child). My whole body was covered with blotches and my face turned red and kind of blew up so I looked a bit like an rhino who went for a skin peel to the wrong dermatologist. Now, a week later, all that is gone. What is amazing is that the skin all over my body and face do indeed seem to have undergone a refining from the fever and the peeling from within. I never cease to be amazed by the processes the body and psyche goes through. In the meantime I stayed in bed, rested, took lots of immune enhancing substances and wrote more on my screenplay.

19 I live in Australia I am 41 years of age and feel that I need a whole new approach to skin care particularly face and neck. Can Leslie recommend any particular product for me.

Take a look at Suzanne Hall’s Living Nature products from New Zealand. I think they are some of the best in the world – all natural and without artificial preservatives. See what you think.

20 Where in New Zealand can I buy coconut oil?

Coconut oil is hard at room temperature. You can find it in health food stores or any market that sells Samoan raw materials or Cook Islander fare.

21 Where can I get Stevia in England.

Please see Forum under Stevia.

22 Where do you recommend going for a detox fasting holiday?

How I wish I knew of somewhere I could recommend without hesitation. If anyone has any recommendations, please send them to the Forum and we will publish them next month.

23 How does one stay motivated and strong to start a new program of nutrition and well being.

Only one way I know of: to decide that you and your life matter enough to nurture them. This is where it all begins and ends.

24 I love fatty fish like salmon and mackerel but am concerned about mercury contamination. Is it necessary to avoid fish now or are there ways around the mercury issue?

High levels of mercury and aluminum can be found not in the small fish such as mackerel but in the big fishes like tuna. Sadly the world is becoming more and more polluted with each day that passes. We have to make the best of what is available to us. So long as you don’t eat tuna on a daily basis I would think you do not need to worry too much.

25 Have you heard about cold light laser treatment. No this is not a commercial. Uses light energy to stimulate ATP production in the mitochondria and to improve health of cell wall to allow nutrients in. Think here I could add to my knowledge by encouraging clients to change life style as you promote. Let me know what you think.

I did a broadcast last week with a woman who runs a clinic which does this kind of treatment. I hope in the next few weeks to examine it more thoroughly. Meanwhile why not see how much you can find out about it on the net?

26 Can you tell me about carob chocolate and would it be OK to have small amounts of this as a treat, I am doing Insulin Balance and have lost enough weight. I swim 3 km's a week and power walk 5 kms the other 2 day's (the weekends are kept free)I am also unsure as to what to introduce so that I don't lose any more weight.

Chocolate or carob makes no difference. It is the sugar and milk they contain that you want to concern yourself with. So long as your blood sugar and insulin have become balanced through the program you can enjoy the odd chocolate bar or pasta or what have you. I suggest however that you only eat the best, never junk food of any kind.

27 I have suffered with migraines for years, also constipation, how can this diet help me. Also I work in an residential home for the elderly. One lady came in she was 87yrs old she looked fantastic & her health is amazing, we all commented on her being so well. Then I noticed she had a Leslie Kenton book on her table, I had heard of Leslie years ago, but this really made me think! someone desperate for that inside awakening.

I suggest you read AGE POWER out now. I think you will find it contains many of the answers you are looking for within.

28 I have read with interest that carbohydrate cravings can be linked to Candida Albicans. Is this also possible for males? I have been told that I have an intolerance to wheat and when I eat wheat products feel bloated and often have ongoing skin problems, almost like eczema. The other of my question I have, has to do with the Sedona Method. I remember reading somewhere that you recommended this technique. Have you actually tried it and can you recommend it from personal experience?

Do read AGE POWER. All of what you are asking me you will find within.

29 I've got several of Leslie's books on Biogenic Diet and her newest book on high protein diet really confuses me. I can't make it out. Some statements are very contradicting to what she wrote earlier on. I would like to know where does she stands herself now. Thank You so much for Journey To Freedom.

Insulin Balance is not a high protein diet. It is higher than Biogenics however. When I wrote Biogenics I did not then realize that we thrive on higher levels of protein than is generally believed in the naturopathic tradition. Neither had the research in paleopathology been done then. For me Insulin Balance and all you will find within AGE POWER have turned out to be the missing pieces to the RAW ENERGY puzzle.

30 What is the best face cream that you can recommend for a woman in her menopause years.

I like the horrifically expensive Crème de La Mer. I also like Dr Hauschka’s Rose Day Cream.

31 I have the opportunity to visit New Zealand (from London)in October. Have you any tips on how to handle the length of the flight?

Big challenge. Long haul flights – of which I take many each year – are nasty. I do not eat airline food. I take a two liter bottle of water for each 12 hour flight together with some grilled chicken breasts, a few apples maybe and whatever else I can think of. I drink masses of water, walk a lot (always sit on the aisle so you can use the lavatory often), watch lots of movies, sleep as much as I can, drink the odd glass of fruit juice (which I don’t do ordinarily) together with the water and – if you are lucky enough to go via Singapore Airport – go for a wonderful outdoor swim in their beautiful pool during the three hour layover. Have a good trip. New Zealand is a magnificent country with the most wonderful people all over it.

32 In the X factor diet you mention that coffee blocks fat burning. Is it the caffeine in coffee, or something else. I drink a lot of green tea and will stop if caffeine does this. Many thanks for your dedication to health and evolution and the inspirational writing style. Love and laughter.

It is supposed to be the caffeine which blocks fat burning. I have never found that this I so however. I know people who can drink green tea and thrive on it but take the same amount of caffeine in coffee (or even drink so called decaffeinated coffee) and find fat burning gets blocked. It’s a mystery.

33 In your recipes you say to use a couple of scoops of whey protein and then in brackets enough to yield 40g of pure protein, do you mean to weigh the protein because the scoops are all different sizes?

It will tell you on the packet how many scoops of what size equal how many grams of protein.

34 Please can you tell me more about Binaural sound system.

Read AGE POWER.

35 HI AS A 'NEW FRIEND' I was wondering if you could please advise who I can contact in Auckland (preferably Central) that would be considered a Ketogenic Consultant. I am reading your book X-Factor, but feel I need some one on one consultation.

Look in Resources on the website here for how to find a practitioner in Auckland trained in Functional Medicine whom you can work with.

36 Could you please send me information on stem cell therapy as discussed on the GERRY RYAN RADIO SHOW on RTE RADIO. Also the name of the book as I missed the details. I suffer from a condition called Milo Fibrosis which is a failure of my bone marrow. I would appreciate your help.

I do not have information on Stem Cell Therapy. You will find this on the net – masses of it. I have written at length on Live Cell Therapy and the way it can do much of what scientists are trying to do with stem cell therapy but far cheaper and without creating a black market in human fetuses. This you will find in AGE POWER. The chapter is called "De-Aging the Matrix".

37 Having read "The X Factor Diet" with enthusiasm, I am having great difficulty locating a Usana distributor in the UK who mentions the "Get Lean Video Program" by Dr. Michael Colgan. The distributor I have located in an Internet search only has supplements for sale, and there is no email link to query them. A widespread search under Colgan's name also reaped no positive results.

I am surprised as a number of people have been able to get them although the Colgan Videos have recently been replaced by some using rubber bands instead of weights by Nancy Popp who worked with Michael on the original videos. They too are good. See if you can contact USANA USA where they all come from. Anything you find out do let us know so we can let others know.

38 I have read and enjoyed a few of her books. I am interested in studying NUTRITION in distance learning for a degree. Unfortunately I was not able to find a good place. I was wondering whether you could refer me to some or to ant organization that might help.

I suggest the Institute of Optimal Nutrition in London.
