FAQ October

The number of people writing to me with questions is phenomonal - I could fill a book with them. So I decided it maybe beneficial to show some of the more commonly asked questions and my responses to them. However, some of the recommendations may not be appropriate in all situations and are not intended as a substitute for treatment or services ordinarily provided by health care professionals for physiological or psychological complaints. Always review any information that you receive on-line with your personal medical care provider. Because of the complexity of medical situations, medical questions will not be addressed.

I've also selective resources relative to healing that I want to tell you about. FAQ Archives.

1 How safe is it to use seaweeds during radiotherapy. I initially bought in barley miso to use with shiitake mushrooms and sea vegetables. But the more I scour the Internet the more confused I have become. Recently I've come across research suggesting that using soy is inadvisable one week before during and one week after radiation. What do you think? If seaweeds remove heavy metals will they interfere with the radiotherapy treatment of killing cancer cells.I am about to have 33 radiotherapy treatments over 6weeks to my face and neck after having a squamous cell carcinoma node removed from my neck. Doctors have been unable to find the primary site in my body and say radiotherapy should kill any remaining cancerous cells presuming they are in my face neck area. I have always eaten well with plenty of fruit and veg and never ever smoked and drink very moderately, so it is particularly galling to get a disease associated with smoking and heavy alcohol.Even if you can't answer this Leslie I just want you to know that many of your books and articles have given me a great deal of pleasure over the years. Pauline

A: Pauline: I do not know for sure however I would be very surprised if seaweeds interfere with the killing of cancer cells. There are so many influences on cancer these days with increased pollution and all it causes. I wish you the very best with your treatment. Thanks for your kind comments about my work. They mean a lot to me.

2: Where I can source Coenzyme A in the UK?

A: This information is in the back of AGE POWER. You can also look up CO-A on my website.

3: Leslie,do you know of any workshops about X Factor and related topics in New Zealand?

A: Sadly I don’t and they are badly needed. I would teach them myself but I never found a good person to organize public workshops for me in New Zealand

4: Ref the X Factor diet, p. 178, Nutritional Supplements for Ketogenics and p. 189 Nutritional Supplements for Insulin Balance. Are these supplements recommended because we do not get enough of their ingredients from the respective diets? If not, then why? How does one decide if one really needs them or not? Exactly the same questions apply for the antioxidants recommended for Ketogenics on p. 172.

A: Supplements are not strictly necessary however so many of our foods are so depleted of essential vitamins and minerals that they can act as a kind of safety net to deal with any less than optimal levels.

5: In your book 'The X factor Diet' you say that if your temperature on waking is below 98.2 after 10 minutes then it suggests that your thyroid may be overactive (hyperthyroidism) but in one of the books you recommended 'Solved The Riddle of Illness' it gives the same test but suggests that with the same temperature result you are likely to be hypothyroid (underactive). Can you clarify this for me please.

A: You are quite right, a low temperature indicates an under active thyroid – hypothyroidism not an overactive one. If it says otherwise in X FACTOR DIET this is an editorial misprint. Please let me know what page it is on and I will see that it is corrected in the next edition.

6: As a semi vegetarian (I only eat fish) I was wondering if there could be a problem in having too much fish as I eat it every day. I understand due to the Mercury levels in Tuna that I shouldn't consume it more 3 times a week? Is it o.k to eat salmon and sardines every day? Also I love fruit and veg. Can I eat as many veg as I want and fruit so long as they are low on the Glycaemic rating? One last question! Can I eat Tofu every day and is 100gms a day too much? Thanks, I really enjoyed your book The X Factor, it makes alot of sense to me. I feel fantastic! Juliet.

A: I am so pleased Juliet. Eat all the fish you want. It is an excellent choice of protein. But you are quite right I would not eat tinned tuna more than a couple of times a week as tuna is high up on the food chain and aluminum and other heavy metals and pollutants can therefore build up in its body.

7: Hello Leslie, thank you for your great books. I have a problem and nobody seems to know the answer. At the moment it is not possible to buy solgars whey powder in the Netherlands, but I can buy fresh milkwhey from a farm in my neighborhood. Nobody seems to know how much carbs and proteins are in the whey. Can I use it in the X Factor diet? Please help me out. Thank you. Carmen

A: Carmen: No fresh whey is not micro filtered whey. You can not substitute. Why not see if you can order Solgar’s Whey to Go on line from the UK?

8: I am a new sufferer of RA (since February 2002) and would ask you to provide this 56 year old male - 29 years vegetarian - some serious pointers of how to fight off the pain and awful disbilitating fatigue and depression caused by this disease...thankyou thankyou thankyou

A: I am sorry but I do not know what ‘RA’ is referring to.

9: Dear Leslie, I live in Adelaide Australia. I have just read your new article in "What's New" on CoA. I have gone to many of our best health shops but no one has heard of it. I have gone to the Internet to find out but all it gives me is info. on CoQ10. They wouldn't be the same thing by any chance? Thanks for your precious time again.Claudine Deneuve

A: Type in Coenzyme A Technologies in Google for the American manufacturer or order from the web address on this website. (See archives).

10: I remember you once saying that antiperspirant deodorants could be unsafe because of their aluminum content. Where can I buy or what can I use as an alternative? Many thanks, Eileen

A: There are a number available in health food stores including a ‘rock’ which you can use and which lasts a very long time.

11: Is the X Factor diet suitable for conceiving and pregnancy? Also how do you figure out how much fat you are carrying?I have got polycystic ovaries is this diet suitable for me?

A: Insulin Balance Program is great for anyone anytime. If you are pregnant you must listen to what your body tells you it does and does not want and be sure not to restrict the amounts you are eating.

12: I have been diagnosed with post viral fatigue and am seeking ANY advice as regards diet, or of knowledge of any doctors who have an expertise in PVF. I realize it is difficult to be too specific as it is a viral condition, but the more information I can get, the better. Look forward to hearing from you, Juliet.A:

You are right Juliet. This is a very individual thing. However Insulin Balance Eating which eliminates sugar and high glycemic carbs is excellent to support the immune system, eliminate fatigue and strengthen the system as a whole. Read the chapter called "Scourge of Power" in AGE POWER. It deals with Candida overgrowth which is so often a factor in your condition and needs to be addressed.

13: Usually to follow a diet correctly we have to count the calories that we consume everyday, and this is very time consuming and a big hassle indeed. Do you have any recommendations to make things simple?

A: Read X FACTOR DIET – no calorie counting whatever.

14: Is Insulin Balance OK for children? After what age?

A: It is good for almost anyone. My grandchildren are being raised on it. Make sure kids get plenty of fresh vegetables and medium and low glycemic fruits.

15: Do you have your latest book Age Power available in New Zealand yet?

A: It comes out Mid October.

16: Dear Leslie,I recently borrowed your video "10 day Clean Up Plan" from the library and was blown away.I noticed that it is no longer available to purchase - and I would be very interested in the reprint rights to the video and the book. Do you think it is possible? I know that many Australians could benefit from these products and I have the marketing experience to strongly promote it here.Your Sincerely, Paul Southren

A: This surprises me as the Australian distributor is supposed to have it still in print. They are: Anna and Philippe de Montignie, Discovery International, 261 Centre Road, Bentleigh, Victoria 3204, Australia, Telephone (61) 395639344. Please let me know if you are able to order it from them or if it is out of print.

17: After reading the X Factor Diet, I was under the impression that bread and potatoes should not be eaten, but find them in Leslie's receipes? I am eating a lot of nuts as snacks. Is this is OK?

A: I don’t know what recipes you are referring to unless they are from other books I have written. Bread and potatoes are not really part of X FACTOR EATING.

18: I'm doing the Insulin Balance diet although I'm not overweight but would like a healthier lifestyle. I've really missed my Live Muesli breakfast which is 1tblsp oats, 3tblsp soya yoghourt, fruit (not bananas) 2 tblsp ground linseeds and 1 tblsp ground pumpkin, sunflower and sesame seeds mixed. Could I still continue to have this for breakfast.

A: Absolutely.

19: I live in Adelaide Australia. So far the Skin Matrix skincare range is still unheard of here. I have been on the Internet to find that all is ready. Is there some where I can purchase this product please.

A: Look up Coenzyme A Technologies on Google and see if you can order it from there.

20: Dear Leslie, you have been my guide, guru and beacon for the past eighteen years, and I have read all your books and followed your food combining diet regularly. I am a vegetarian and I assumed you were too, but you book The X Factor seems to show you are not.I wouldn't dream of criticizing you, but I must confess it came as a bit of a shock. Have you changed your mind recently about the vegetarian issue? And, more relevant to me, as I really would like to try your diet but I will not give up vegetarianism (no fish either), could you please give a more exhaustive list then the one you give in your book about other pulses and wholegrain cereal one can safely eat? What type of rice can I eat? What type of wholemeal bread is less harmful? What about tempeh and seitan? Can I eat polenta? (I'm Italian, I can't give up pasta and polenta!)If you could put on your site a more complete list of vegetarian proteins (what about quorn?) I'd really appreciate that.Thank you so much

A: I was a vegetarian for twenty years until I discovered that my body was not. When I began to eat more protein foods such as fish and game and chicken, I became stronger, had better skin and hair. If you feel well doing what you are doing then I would certainly continue to eat this way. The only real guru is inside you.

21: From a young age (13) I have scratched my legs to pieces through various methods of epilation. My skin is sensitive and despite this because I'm fair but but have black hair I went through hell to remove the hair and now have dark brown marks, hard skin and scars on my legs. I am considering glycolic peel to help get rid of the marks - can you recommend any creams or natural masks that would help instead? I must add that I love your books and have convinced my friends and cousins to read them too!!I have just ordered Age Power and can't wait to read that - I read X Factor in one weekend!

A: This is not an easy task. There is a pulsed light therapy (not laser) available in some salons (few that helps scaring a great deal. If you live in the UK I suggest you contact hq@advancedskintherapy.co.uk. They have a clinic in Harley Street in London and also in Brighton.

22: Which means of water purification is healthier distillation or filtration?

A: Big question. In the UK I personally use reverse osmosis filtration and then follow it with distillation. (See resources on this website for good suppliers of both kinds of equipment.)

23: (This is Colin of "Colin and Barbara" at your talk last night. The grey haired Aussie guy who asked you how the experiment in NZ effected your attitude.)Thanks. Thanks for the affirmation on my attitude to life.Yes, I have a thousand questions to ask you; but not technicalquestions - all that is in your books. What intrigues me about you is your mind. This is why I asked you if you had read Napolean Hill's book "Think and Grow Rich." Written in the mid thirties it basically says don't chase the dollar - start with a dream, turn it into an idea, plan your step by step goals, and go for it with a passion (but only with something that you absolutely "love to death"). Like your passion - one can feel it burning. By the way, Hill says that your worst enemies are your family and friends - "Oh, but you can't...." Sound familiar? All of Hill's ideas are now "the latest rage" for psychologists in books on "neuro-linguistic programming". Marvelous what adifference a name makes! I was very surprised when you told me that you were not a vegetarian when you wrote "Raw Energy" (which inspired me).( I must stop saying that, it sounds as though I am easily inspired when in fact I dismiss most health fanatics as "a bit off" to say the least, and note that a good proportion of the patrons of health food shops are pretty pale and whimpish.)Anyway, the only thing that I disagreed with you about, and now find that we don't disagree anyway, was that I always felt that a million years of evolution said that we ought to eat a little (lean) meat. And I am delighted that you also feel that evolution cannot be cast aside. Evolution even plays a major role in our social/sexual/psychological behavior (rather than"my mum never loved me" stuff); as Dr Helen Fisher (an American Anthropologist and Psychologist) says in her book "The Sex Contract: The Evolution of Human Behavior" I want to live to 120 years at least. My Dad is approaching 83 years and still gets up to fix the roof, and I'm damned sure that I'm not going to let him beat me! He'll probably make it to 100 if I can convince him to stop eating cream.(He is still mentally active - learning to use my old computer.)My big burden is that Barbara likes living in noisy, dirty, crowded London, and doesn't want to live to 100; while I yearn to hear the silence of a distant crow on the Australian plains,or think I hear the soft air move, or not sure if a beetle walked.(Don't miss-judge me: I love Jazz et cetera...)And finally, your mention, last night, of the inner self, was one of the "best connections" I felt with you. Great stuff Lady.

A: Colin: Your note is very interesting and I am delighted to read all you have written. I will certainly see if I can get a hold of Napolean Hills’s book and read it. It may be providential that you have suggested it. Who knows.
