That’s all well and good, but what is Syndrome X?
Syndrome X is a cluster of metabolic disorders which often result from living for a long time on a typical Western diet of convenience foods riddled with hidden sugars and junk fats as well as processed grains and starchy vegetables. Syndrome X was first identified by Gerald Reaven, an endocrinologist at California’s Stanford University in 1988. Since then the clinical experience of doctors trained in functional medicine, have taken our understanding of it way beyond his first assertions. Extensive research by other scientists indicates that Syndrome X is reaching epidemic proportions and causing big health problems in the Western world including soaring obesity. Scientists examining the effects of low fat/high carb diets insist that, contrary to popular belief, these are the foods that make us fat in the first place.
But how?
Syndrome X is also known as insulin resistance. The primary abnormality which links together all the disorders associated with the syndrome is a mounting insensitivity to the hormone insulin at a cellular level. The human body evolved to eat a Paleolithic diet rich in non-starchy vegetables and plant nutrients, top quality proteins and omega 3 fats. Today, we stress our systems with so much high-density carbohydrate that the high levels of glucose triggered by such foods flood our cells with insulin, the hormone that helps the body turn carbohydrate into energy. Our bodies become unresponsive to the hormone so our pancreas secretes more and more of it in an attempt to get energy into the cells. Unable to turn this excess glucose into energy, the body lays it down as fat.

The X-Factor Diet uses two programs which have the same goal: to help you shed excess fat permanently while regenerating your body, restoring vitality and enhancing your health.
Ketogenics: For women with more than 35% body fat and men with more than 22%. This is a scientifically based method for kick-starting your body into fat-burning mode. It is based on a calorific ratio of 50:20:30 with 50% of calories coming from protein, 20% from low glycaemic/low density (slow release) carbohydrates and 30% from healthy fats – lots of Omega 3s. Each meal will be made up of two parts protein to one part low glycaemic vegetables.
Insulin Balance: A program for women with less than 35% body fat and men with less than 22%. Insulin Balance is based on a moderate carbohydrate and adequate protein diet. The diet will reduce your intake of grains, improve the kind of fats you eat and introduce a calorific ratio of 35:35:30 for top quality proteins, low glycaemic index carbohydrates and health-enhancing fats at each meal. Each meal will be made up of one part protein to two parts carbohydrates.

Tried and Tested: The X-Factor Diet
A documentary following the progress of volunteers on the X-Factor Diet was recently aired in New Zealand. Called To Age or Not to Age, the program took 8 men and women of different ages and backgrounds and asked them to follow the Ketogenics and Insulin Balance programs for just 5 weeks. The results were verified by the Wakefield Hospital in Wellington and used standard medical measurements (such as HDL/LDL cholesterol, blood pressure, triglycerides, insulin and glucose levels and lean body mass to fat ratios). The results were astounding showing that it is, in fact, possible to reverse the biological measurements of age and rejuvenate the body in a medically measurable way.

The Principles of the Ketogenics and Insulin Balance Programs
Eliminate both refined and high glycaemic index carbohydrates, including flour, starchy vegetables like potatoes, white rice, sugar and other sweeteners.
Choose natural, fresh, organic, unprocessed foods
Eat many of your vegetables and fruits raw if you can, to get the benefits of the sunlight quanta they carry
Make non-starchy vegetables your primary source of carbohydrates
Steer clear of soft drinks, fruit juices, alcohol, and other highly processed drinks
Eliminate vegetable oils rich in omega-6 fatty acids from your diet. Use cold-pressed, extra-virgin olive oil instead
Enrich your diet with omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil and flaxseed oils
Refuse all trans fats – junk fats found in deep-fried foods, margarine as well as foods that contain partially hydrogenated oils
Eat protein foods at every meal and snack
Eliminate coffee – especially on Ketogenics
Stay away from all highly processed convenience foods
Gradually determine your own best level of carbohydrate for weight loss and maintenance and stick to it
Take a multiple vitamin plus plant factor antioxidant such as flavonoids, pycnogenal and alpha-lipoic acid regularly
Do some form of strength training four days a week for 30 minutes to strengthen your lean body mass
Walk briskly for 15-30 minutes each day to counter insulin resistance, enhance energy, improve your body’s update of glycogen and maintain good emotional balance
