Chapter One, THE MASTER GAME
Did you ever wonder what it was like to feel great most of the time? To awaken in the mornings looking forward to each day? What is Ultrahealth?
It is not the same thing as preventative medicine nor is it medical self-care, or holistic medicine. Preventative medicine is mainly concerned with avoiding illness, holistic health is primarily aimed at treatment - although the treatment of the whole person rather than specific symptoms. Medical self-care aims to make a person able to diagnose and take care of his own minor medical problems. Although ultrahealth can share in some of the benefits of all three, in a strong sense it is still very different and goes far beyond them. For. ultrahealth does not focus primarily on disease or its prevention. Instead, its major thrust is a deliberate choice on the part of the person practicing it to live at the peaks - to explore the heights - of well-being: physically, emotionally and in the full use of his creative potentials. In fact the choice for living at the peaks is one which an increasing number of people in developed countries are making. This is evident in our growing desire for high-level fitness, for longer and more active lives, for improving and preserving our good looks and for consistent higher energy levels. Where in 1970 an ambitious man or woman might have wanted more recognition, money and possessions, in the eighties these are not enough. Instead he or she wants to make the most of their own potentials in every possible way. Ultrahealth aims at the enjoyable and often amusing search for peaks of whole-person functioning. As such it is its own goal and its own reward. And the process of moving towards it can be as much fun as the achievements of its ends.
