PRELUDE
What follows is beyond reason - a true tale of time and death. The manuscript passed into my hands only eighteen months ago. It was given me as a gift - if gift it can be called - by Michael, a man whose courage dazzled me - a man I could not help but love.
When first I read these pages I had never heard of the Illuminati. I knew nothing of secret societies and secret agendas which bind ordinary men and women in economic straight jackets, convince us of our impotence then feed off our energies and lay waste our planet. Now, say some, I know too much. For too often death awaits those like Michael who dare to live their truth. Yet what other life is worth the living?
For two hundred years the tale this manuscript tells has drawn the lives of six people into a dance of fire from which there was no escape. I am now the seventh ... God willing the last. As such I feel compelled to make public what little we know - or think we know - about Ludwig. My motive is simple: I hope, even for a brief space in time, to crystallize the dance's movement, and thus exorcise its power - lest I too become consumed. This is no mean task when you are caught in a saraband where death weaves her web around the thighs of time as time tortures her in the sweet rhythms of his lust.
Whether or not I shall succeed I do not know. What has begun to frighten me is this: in recent weeks I have found myself beyond caring. There is one thing I wish to state clearly before I begin: I did not seek to dance this dance. I did not choose to pass on this tale. Who would? Yet, like Michael, Wawruch, and the rest, I became trapped in its music. So it would seem did Ludwig.
