...whispers of the soul
A Californian by birth, I grew up on the road with my mother Violet -
a painter, and my father, Stan Kenton – the American jazz musician. I
loved mythology more than anything in the world – especially the Greek
and Egyptian gods. As a kid, I lived on junk food in truck driver’s cafes
and I was always ill – one sickness after another with nightmares every
night. But nobody knew what was wrong with me.
Later, in my 20s I suffered from depression with no apparent cause. Again
nobody could help. Then, by accident – although to tell you the truth,
I no longer believe in accidents – I met some of the finest doctors in
the English-speaking world. Each of these men and women, although highly
trained in orthodox medicine, had turned their backs on the drug-based,
high-tech symptomatic treatment of disease to work with simple things
like diet, meditation, hydrotherapy, breathing and skin-brushing that
help the body heal itself. They taught me how the body has the remarkable
ability to heal itself once it is detoxified and then supplied with what
it needs to live at the highest levels of energy and wellbeing. They taught
me that illness, far from being something that is a source of fear, is
a great teacher. Each of us who has struggled with it, comes to know just
how magnificent are the mysteries of living organic systems, how closely
our own health is bound up with health of the earth, and what it is like
to struggle with what seems to be an impossible task – healing.
Through the use of a high-raw diet, meditation, exercise, and learning
to listen to what I call the ‘whispers of the soul’, life healed me. As
I learned about health and energy, freedom and joy, I began to write about
it.
