MAKE WAY FOR FREEDOM IN 2010

I’ve never put much stock in New Years Resolutions. Why? First because they imply so much self-criticism otherwise we would not have made them in the first place. Second, they usually last no more than a couple of weeks before we abandon them only to end up feeling worse about ourselves than we did before we made them.

For me New Years is a time of looking into the future, dreaming wonderful dreams and focusing our intentions on what we want to create. Desire something from your soul, delight in letting your imagination run wild in enjoyment of the longing for it. Continue celebrate what whatever you are asking the Universe bring into your life. Then sit back and allow it to happen. When we the focus our intention and delight in it - instead of letting all of those unconscious, habitual thought patterns, which we all carry, rule us, it transform our lives.

This is far more than the old-fashioned notion of positive thinking. By now, hundreds of well-designed scientific studies affirm beyond all doubt that shifts in consciousness and active imagination changes material reality without exerting willpower or trying to force something to happen.

Leslie Kenton and Gus and GrissyIt’s time to, get savvy about the unconscious thought patterns and beliefs that tend to run our lives. We all have them. Most are formed in childhood yet - so long as we remain unaware of them - they continue to dictate our choices and to flavour our perceptions of reality in negative ways. You might carry the belief, for instance, that being productive is good and taking time out to do nothing is bad - i.e. lazy. Without ever thinking it through, you might find yourself always on the go, taking on more commitments than you really want, downing cups of coffee to keep going when your body starts to give out and feeling guilty when you need a break.

Let me offer a few simple suggestions that can help unhook some unhelpful beliefs so you can live more of the life you long to live and set free more of your authentic power. It lies in waiting just beneath habitual negative thought patterns hoping we will set it free.

Celebrate Life’s Pleasures
It’s been said so many times “you are what you eat” but it’s also true that you are how you think about what you eat. The next time you treat yourself to one of your favorite “forbidden” foods – perhaps a piece of the best black chocolate – indulge your senses fully by enjoying it to the max. Don’t let guilt or the feeling of “I really shouldn’t…” poison the experience. Instead use the experience to feed your soul always making sure that the chocolate you choose is dark - 70 to 80% pure cocoa - after all cocoa is one of the world’s sacred foods - and the best you can find anywhere. You’re far too valuable to be putting anything but the best into that body of yours.

See Yourself Anew
How you think about yourself and feel about yourself can color every aspect of life – for better or for worse. Exchanging thoughts of self-criticism and judgement for celebration and respect dramatically boosts self-esteem. Try this simple exercise: Stand in front of your bathroom mirror and close your eyes. Think of someone or something that you love and let the feeling of pleasure fill your body. Then, open your eyes and meet your reflection in the mirror as if it is a loving and much loved friend. Carry out your usual routine, cleansing, moisturizing, brushing your teeth etc. but with delight and respect for the person you see in the mirror.

Laugh Your Way to Freedom
Finding humour in our day-to-day existence is a powerful way to transform the way we think and feel. Laughter gets your breathing going, makes hormones flow the right way, and even improves your immune system, making you more resistant to illness, ageing and fatigue. Keep a library of DVDs for laughter therapy, read amusing stories. Enjoy them often. Let yourself laugh alone and with others.

Count Those Blessings
The next time you feel resentful or hard done by, count your blessings. Gratitude is one of the most powerful transformers of consciousness. But it must never be forced. Take out a pen and paper and make a list of 5-10 things you feel grateful for – it could be as simple as a piece of music you love, a bouquet of flowers, fresh-squeezed orange juice, a novel you are reading or an email from a long-lost friend. Notice how, in the face of thanksgiving, resentment and anger naturally dissolve.

Sweat Yourself Clear
Toxic build-up in your body from pollution, chemicals in cosmetics and processed foods can undermine not only how you look, but how you feel and how you think. Taking a sauna (infrared is ideal) or steam bath for 20 minutes or so, a couple of times a week, brings skin a the glow of vitality and helps lift off stressors as well as thoughts and feelings that weigh us down.

Cry Without Shame
If you think crying is a sign of weakness and that you should put on a brave face instead, think again. Chemicals excreted in emotional tears have a soothing effect because they help the body release stress hormones. So let your tears flow when they need to. Crying is a great way to clear out emotional residue, shift negative thought patterns and leave you with a fresh outlook on life.

Think Yourself Free
Use this exercise to break free from the constraints of habitual thoughts and to fire up your dreams – then begin to live them. Take a piece of paper and, without analysing or thinking too hard, complete the following sentences:

  • If I didn’t have to be responsible I would…

  • If I had the time I would…

  • If my age were not an issue I would…

  • If my family/husband were supportive I would…

  • If miracles could happen I would…

Once you’ve written a few of your heart’s desires, begin to live them, however crazy or far-fetched they may seem. Start by taking small steps in the direction of what you love and notice how your whole life begins to realign itself in a magical way. Its a great way to connect with your essential being and live your life from your authentic core. Who needs New Years Resolutions? Happy New Year to you. May 2010 be the most creative, exciting and transformative year in you life. You deserve it.

With every blessing,

Leslie
